“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.”
–Ralph Waldo Emerson
There is an ancient story of King Arthur and Sir Gawain, in which Sir Gawain must marry a hideous old hag in order to save his King’s life. They learn that the answer to “what do women really want,” is sovereignty; the right to be themselves and make their own choices. When Sir Gawain gives his bride her sovereignty, a spell is broken and she returns to her beautiful self. While seeking the answer to this question, the King and the Knight must venture into dark and scary places and look upon ugliness and darkness.
Inside each of us are parts that we consider unlovable. Parts that we feel are dark, scary and ugly. When Gawain brought his hideous hag betrothed out of the darkness, into the light and made her his bride, looking upon her with love and acceptance, her ugliness fell away and her true beauty was revealed. We need to do this with the unlovable parts of ourselves. Know that you are loved, completely and unconditionally, and take the steps to love all parts of yourself in this way. Find what you consider ugly and dark, bring it into the light and shower it with love, forgiveness and acceptance, and gratitude for helping you to get to where you are. Allow the beauty of you to be revealed.
